Justice Lokur stressed the imperative for the Supreme Court to revert to its essence as the “People’s Court.”
During an interview with The Quint at the 17th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival, Justice Madan B Lokur, a former judge of the Supreme Court of India, emphasized the need for the Supreme Court to reclaim its role as the “People’s Court.” He reflected on the recent judgment regarding the cancellation of remission for convicts in the Bilkis Bano case, noting that the use of the term “restored” in headlines and commentary suggested a prior loss of faith in the judiciary.
Justice Lokur expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of certain verdicts, including the Article 370 case. He highlighted the importance of the judiciary earning and maintaining the public’s trust, indicating a broader concern about the state of the Indian judiciary.
