Kolkata Rape-Murder: Doctors’ Protest Continues in Bengal

A strike by junior doctors in West Bengal entered its tenth day on Sunday, continuing to disrupt healthcare services across the state. The protest, sparked by the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has seen outpatient departments closed and only emergency services available.

Junior doctors are demanding swift justice for their colleague and improved security measures to prevent such incidents in the future. “We understand the impact on patients, but our protest is crucial in seeking justice and ensuring our safety at work,” said one agitating doctor.

The case has seen a civic volunteer arrested and the investigation transferred to the CBI, with the Calcutta High Court ordering the probe to be taken over by the central agency. The junior doctors are also seeking the release of the post-mortem examination report.

As the strike continues, patients are facing difficulties in accessing healthcare services. However, senior doctors are attending to emergency cases to ensure critical care is provided.

The incident has highlighted concerns about workplace safety and security for healthcare professionals, particularly women. The protesting doctors are demanding concrete measures to prevent such incidents and ensure a safe working environment.

The state government has been urged to take immediate action to address the concerns of the junior doctors and restore normal healthcare services. The protest has sparked a wider conversation about workplace safety and the need for prompt action in cases of violence against healthcare professionals.
