WFTU Workers’ In Support With Palestine
“The Water Transport Workers Federation of India (WTWFI), affiliated with the World Federation of Trade Unions, has taken a firm stance against loading or unloading weaponized cargoes bound for Israel or any allied nation involved in the conflict with Palestine. General Secretary T Narendra Rao cited the brutal use of Indian-supplied weapons by Israel, especially against Palestinian women and children, as the catalyst for this decision. Representing 3,500 workers at major ports in India, the WTWFI, associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist), emphasized that participating in handling these weapons contributes to the harm of innocent lives. The union’s press release, dated 14 February, condemned Israel’s recent attack on Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire, expressing solidarity with those advocating for peace. The Quint conducted interviews with port workers and leaders to delve into their motivations for the boycott, while also seeking insights from industry and government sources to assess the feasibility of such a move.”
