The Indian Legal Education System Privileges English-Speaking Students: CJI DY Chandrachud
Addressing the inauguration of the latest National Law University in Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University in Prayagraj, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud remarked, Despite advancements in legal education, the current Indian legal education system predominantly benefits specific urban students proficient in English speaking.
Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud emphasized the necessity of extending law university education to remote rural areas to ensure that students from small towns have equal opportunities to pursue legal careers. Speaking at the inauguration event of the Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University, Chandrachud stated, “Technology has empowered us to reach students in remote areas. Despite advancements in legal education, the current legal education system primarily benefits English-speaking urban students.” He added, “A survey on diversity in five law universities revealed that students from diverse backgrounds face challenges in admission due to their inability to speak English.”
