NLU ALLAHABAD – A NEW VENTURE FOR ALL LAW ASPIRANTS

In a landmark development within the realm of legal education, the inauguration of operations at Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University in Prayagraj was graced by the esteemed presence of Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This marks the inception of a transformative chapter in legal studies for the region. The state government, on July 6, issued orders delineating the pay scales for newly established positions, following formal approval from the governor.Mukesh Kumar Singh, the Special Secretary, Legal, communicated to the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at UP National Law University, Prayagraj, detailing the pay scales for key roles. The Vice-Chancellor’s post, for instance, is set at ₹75,000 Fixed (Revised 2,10,000 Fixed Pay) with a ₹5,000 university allowance. Similarly, the Registrar’s position entails a pay scale of 15,600-39,100 Grade pay ₹7,600 (Revised Structure Matrix level 12), while the Finance Controller’s role is set at ₹37,400-67,000, Grade Pay ₹8,900 (Revised Structure Matric Level 13A).The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, on July 29, 2020, approved the establishment of the National Law University in Prayagraj, and the corresponding legislation, the ‘Uttar Pradesh National Law University Prayagraj Act, 2020,’ was passed by the state legislature in the same year. The foundation stone was laid by the then President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, on September 11, 2021.On December 3, 2021, commemorating the birth anniversary of the first President of India, Rajendra Prasad, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the naming of the National Law University in Deoghat, Jhalwa, Prayagraj, after Rajendra Prasad. The university, spanning 28.599 acres initially and expanding to 33.58 acres, will initially offer a five-year BA-LLB course with 60 seats. The first phase involves the creation of 71 positions, including 11 each for professors and associate professors, 34 for assistant professors, and 15 other posts.This development positions the Prayagraj institution as the second national law university in Uttar Pradesh, complementing the existing Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University (RMLNLU) in Lucknow.
